Daughter of Christian C. and Sigrid (Olsgaard) Steen. She grew up in the Thief River Falls, Mn area, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1929. Took her Teacher's training in Thief River Falls and received her Teacher's Certificate in 1930. She taught in Thief River Falls school for two years and then taught in a school near Strandquist, MN for another two years. She was united in marriage to Arthur Kleinwachter on November 1, 1934 in Stephen, MN. They lived on Arther's farm near Strandquist until her death. Was born in rural Strandquist, Minnesota the son of Emil and Mary (Rossler) Kleinwachter. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Strandquist. He attended and graduated from Oakdale Country School west of Strandquist. Julius worked on the family farm with his brothers. In 1934, he enlisted and served in the CCC camp near Ely, Minnesota. March 17, 1942, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Campaigns on the Islands of Rvi-Nanur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima during World War II for which he received the Bronze Star and the Presidential Unit Citation twice. He worked combat communications and attained the rank of Corporal. He was a member of the Fourth Marine Division Battery G of the Third Regiment. He was honorable discharged on November 15, 1945. After returning home, he was united in marriage to Antoinette Theresa Stancyk on June 21, 1949 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Alma, Minnesota. The couple made there home in Nelson Park Township in Marshall County, Minnesota where they raised small grains and dairy cattle. Julius enjoyed farming even after turning the reins over to son, Ben, in 1981, serving his local government and attending Marine Corps reunions. He served as a county commissioner and was on the elevator board, mental health board, the Tri-County ambulance board, FHA and AAA boards, Oakdale and Strandquist School boards and Nelson Park Township board. He also held almost every office at St. Edward’s Church. He was also a member of the American Legion for 44 years and was a past commander. Julius passed away on June 7, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls, Minnesota and is buried at St. Edward’s Cemetery in Strandquist. - submitted by on 10/13/2011 | ||||||||||

Toni, as she was known to family and friends, attended school in Stephen, Minnesota and graduated from Stephen High School in 1938. Then, she earned her teaching degree at Teacher’s College in Warren, Minnesota. She began her long and enjoyable teaching career in a one-room country school. Later she taught first and second grades in the Strandquist and Karlstad, Minnesota school districts. She retired in 1985, but continued to do some substitute teaching. On June 21, 1949 she was united in marriage to Julius Rossler Kleinwachter at St. John’s Catholic Church in Alma, Minnesota. The couple farmed and raised their family in Nelson Park Township in Marshall County, Minnesota until 1981 when they sold their farm to their son, Ben, and moved into the home adjacent to the family farm. Toni was a member of St. Edward’s Church where she was involved in many activities, including teaching Religious Education. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Strandquist, Northern Lites Homemakers, and the Minnesota Education Association. Christopher Kenneth Kleinwachter was born December 30, 1976 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Clare and Carmen (Beenken) Kleinwachter. He grew up in the Grand Forks area and he graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1995. He enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard into Battery A, 1/188th Air Defense Artillery of Grand Forks on March 02, 1994 as a junior in high school. While living in Grand Forks, he worked at Fat Albert’s, Pizza Hut and Wal-Mart. After graduation, Chris reported to basic training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, completing Basic Combat Training on August 03, 1995. From there, he went to advanced individual training at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland, completing that on November 13, 1995 as a Power-Generation Equipment Repairer. He was accepted to the North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, North Dakota, graduating in 2001. Even after moving to Wahpeton, Chris continued to be a part of his National Guard Unit in Grand Forks. He was working for Primewood Inc. of Wahpeton, when he was called to active duty with the US Army as part of Operation of Enduring Freedom on October 20, 2005 and was deployed as a member of the 1/188th Air Defense Artillery Battalion on December 01, 2005. Christopher was a peacemaker and always wanted people to be happy. He enjoyed being around family and close friends and usually tried to organize an activity or game. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities including running, riding a bike and playing basketball. Chris was killed in action as a member of the Security Force from the 1st Battalion, 188th Air Defense Artillery unit in eastern Afghanistan on Thursday, November 29, 2006, while participating in military convoy operations in the Ghazni province when the vehicle he was riding in was involved in a roll over. The accident happened at approximately 5:30 pm central standard time on November 29, 2006 (approximately 4:00 am November 30th Afghanistan time). The 1-188th Air Defense Artillery Security Force was deployed with 152 Soldiers to Afghanistan. The company was mobilized in December 2005 and arrived in Afghanistan in March 2006. The unit provided around-the-clock security in support of U.S. Armed Forces in “Operation Enduring Freedom” defending America’s freedom and protecting the Afghani people. While a member of the North Dakota National Guard, Chris achieved the rank of Corporal (E-4) November 30, 2006 (posthumously) and was awarded to following medals and ribbons: North Dakota Legion of Merit Medal, Combat Action Badge, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement with 2 Oak leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Afghan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device and Bronze Hourglass, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Training Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon, NATO Medal, North Dakota State Achievement Ribbon, North Dakota National Guard Emergency Service Ribbon, North Dakota National Guard Service Ribbon with 10 year Device, North Dakota National Guard Basic Training Ribbon, Qualified Sharp Shooter on M16.
