Elsa was born in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 20, 1942 to Enoch and May (Olsen) Skartvedt. She lived in Caracas, Venezuela until age 7 while her father was in the diplomatic corps for the U.S. State Department. After returning to the U.S., she attended school in Silver Springs, Md. When Elsa was 17 her family moved to Geneva, Switzerland for the year while her father attended the GATT conference there. Elsa worked as a teacher’s aide at the Christ Church Child Center Daycare at Christ Lutheran Church of Bethesda, Md., for 20 years. After moving to International Falls in 1984, she assisted in the Special Education early childhood classroom for several years. For the past 11 years, Elsa had been a volunteer advocate for the Office of Ombudsman for long term care. She was also a Foster Grandparent for RSVP for six years, working in the Headstart Classroom. Elsa was well-known for her beautiful needlework projects, and was especially proud to have won two second place ribbons in the Creative Stitchery Class at the Northern Minnesota District Fair. Among her many other hobbies were oil painting, gardening, and caring for her dog, Pippen, her guinea pig, Cookie, and her parakeets, Twinkie and Tweety. Elsa was a very active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She sang in the choir, helped with Sunday School, Bible School, and worked in the church library. Elsa was preceded in death by her parents, great-nephews Connor and Nicholas Schumacher, cousins Paul, Anne, and Jonathan Bomgren and many aunts and uncles. She is survived by her sister, Carol (Len Peterson) Schumacher, nephews Hans (Shannon) Schumacher and Klaus (Bridget) Schumacher, and niece Erika (Christopher) Lange and great-nephew Nicklaus (Niko) Schumacher as well as cousins Stephen and Gail Bomgren and their mother, her aunt, Elizabeth Bomgren of Fort Worth, Texas.
